Match Report

AFC Blackpool 4-0 Silsden

In what was on paper a very tricky First Division Cup, second round tie against the unbeaten League leaders Silsden, AFC treated the home fans to the best performance of the season on Halloween Night, running out convincing winners 4-0.

A strong looking AFC line-up included former Blackpool and Fleetwood midfielder Jamie Milligan as they looked to advance in a cup competition for the first time this season.

Both sides had early chances but it was AFC who opened the scoring in the 25th minute when top scorer Ben Duffield's shot went past Sils keeper Callum Jakovlevs into the bottom corner. With Milligans excellent passing, AFC had numerous chances to double their lead in an entertaining first half and it was his dangerous freekick that was headed in by defender Martin Baird from eight yards out in the 40th minute to make it 2-0 at the break. A lead AFC thoroughly deserved. Duffield did nearly make it 3-0 as half time approached but he was adjudged to have fouled the keeper.

Given what happened on Saturday at Eccleshall, when AFC gave away a two goal lead late on, the home fans were cautious as the second half began. Silsden came out clearly determined to force their way back into the game, and they pressed forward. But try as they did they could not find their way past a resolute defence.

AFC had the ball in the net again in the 71st minute only for that goal to be disallowed for offside. They were not to be denied again though and with Sils pushing forward to get back in the game, more chances opened up for AFC and Duffield got his second goal in the 80th minute, when Josh Kaines backpass didn't reach Jakovlev. Duffield rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home to make it 3-0.

The rout was complete six minutes later when the Sils failed to clear the ball, and Kit Gregorys neat pass was turned home by Conah Bishop from the edge of the penalty box to give AFC a convincing 4-0 win over Silsden, who had previously been unbeaten by a First Division side so far this season.

On Saturday it is back to League action, with a visit to Birkenhead to take on Cammell Laird 1907.
