AFC Blackpool juniors was founded in June 2004 as Squires Gate JFC and played their matches at the School Road ground and on St Nicholas' School playing fields next door. They were accepted into the Poulton and District Primary League and the Blackpool and District Youth Football League in the 2005-2006 season.
The club grew quickly and in April 2008 when they had outgrown the facilities on offer at Squires Gate, the club moved to St. George's school playing fields and set up as an independent club.
In May 2008 they were approached by Blackpool Mechanics FC with a view to joining them as their juniors with an expansion of their ground to provide pitches for more teams and improved facilities. This was agreed and it was decided that the club should have a new name to reflect the new start.
The club became known as AFC Blackpool but the ground has retained the name ‘The Mechanics' in order to preserve contact with the club's long history. |
